Having never had an internship before, I was not quite sure what to expect. Especially with a major company like Discovery Communications. "You're interning at 'Discovery'? That's awesome!" was most people's reaction. The long and expensive journey to Silver Spring, Maryland, would prove to be completely worthwhile.
It has been 2 weeks since I started my internship. I remember making the first trip to the location on Martin Luther King's day. It was in the evening and the sun had set. The first thing that struck me about the multi leveled building was the big blue globe outside their office. It was so bright that one could spot the building from a distance. It looked too good to be true and I was excited to start immediately.
The next day, the building remained huge of course but did not seem as inviting as the night before. Maybe I was just nervous. I waited for my supervisor to come and escort me to the designated department. As I walked with Octavia, up the elevator, and onto the 5th floor, the interiors seemed to be a maze. It took me a week to actually figure my way in and out of the building.
My assigned workdays are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9am-6pm. The Marc train drops me off at 8.45am and I'm usually rushing to catch the train back home at 6.15pm. The work assigned to me was not quite what I expected but it's an experience and I'm enjoying it as it is keeping me in touch with Final Cut Pro. The primary networks that I create 'Lifts' for include Animal Planet, Discovery Health and Fit, Velocity, Investigation Discovery and The Military Channel. I hope to 'Shadow' someone from the Production department soon. That should be fun!
So far, 'Discovery' has truly been a discovery in an odd way. Discovering my talents, my work ethics, the 'discovery culture', the hallways and much more...
